Artist's Description

Flotsam found its inspiration and materials from my home studio debris. I collect drips of paint from my poured abstract Velocity Series or from paint that has hardened on my palette. Leftover wet paint, brushed on spare canvases become under paintings.
One time, my pile of acrylic scraps brought to mind the plastic garbage that floats in the Pacific. (One American oceanographer coined the phrase the Great Pacific Garbage Patch). Flotsam incorporates all three salvage techniques: the textured background from leftover paint becomes the ocean waves, the red fish from drippings from a poured painting and the floating garbage patch from scraps of dried paint lifted from my artist palette.

About Madeleine Arnett

Madeleine Arnett

My technique of pouring and mixing paint directly on a canvas is a way of connecting with the essence of fluidity. My work is part artistic vision and part serendipity, a fusion of forethought and randomness. I carefully capture any paint or resin which has overflowed and pooled beneath my boards and canvas and upcycle them into new 3D sculptural paintings.
